Thank you for visiting my home page.

My name is Michael Sim and I am an adult nephrologist (kidney medicine specialist) at Kaiser Permanente in South Sacramento. Nephrologists treat patients with kidney disease of all forms, care for patients on kidney replacement therapy or dialysis, treat high blood pressure and care for patients with kidney transplants.

I believe in a team-oriented environment in which the patient, doctor, and health team (nurses, medical assistants, dietitian, social worker, etc.) work together. The goal is to ensure we do everything we can to keep members healthy. I enjoy educating members about kidney diseases, treatment options, and alternatives so together, members and I can make appropriate decisions concerning their healthcare.

Within my specialty, I have an interest in acute kidney injury, diseases of the glomeruli (filters of the kidney), and improving hemodialysis access survival.

I grew up in San Francisco and went to UCLA for college where I majored in physiology. I later moved to Boston, Massachusetts for seven years to attend medical school at Tufts University followed by an internship-residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution. I made my way back to Northern California to complete a fellowship in Nephrology at UC Davis. I started practicing at Kaiser Permanente in January 2007.

I am very happily married and have two sons (born in February 2007 and April 2011) to keep me on my toes! My wife and I enjoy spending time as a family doing our kids' multiple activities (soccer, swimming, basketball, etc), traveling and trying all types of food and wine. When I get a chance, I also like to play golf, go bowling and fiddle around with my car.

If your primary care doctor refers you to me for a visit, I hope we can build a thoughtful, honest and trusting relationship that will keep you healthy and thrive.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
