About Me
Thank you for visiting my home page. I would like to tell you a little bit about who I am and what I do.
I was born and raised in New York and completed my undergraduate and medical school education, as well as residency training there. I relocated to San Francisco for fellowship training (a milder climate was an added bonus). I joined Kaiser Permanente and the Oakland Medical Center as a neonatologist in 1985.
In addition to my medical practice, I have an interest in medical ethics and serve on the ethics committee. I am board-certified in pediatrics and am a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
My non-medical interests include gardening, watching independent and foreign films, listening to jazz and world music, and coaxing my orchids to flower.
Why Neonatology?
Some of you may be unfamiliar with what a neonatologist does, so here is a brief description. I have included a link on this page with additional information about the field of neonatology, and the conditions that neonatologists treat.
Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that focuses on the care of infants in the immediate newborn period. Neonatologists care for both premature and full-term infants. We are often present in the delivery room if a problem is suspected. Neonatologists usually are hospital-based, and work in NICU's (neonatal intensive care units).
I decided on neonatology as a specialty early in my medical training. I saw the responsibility of caring for the tiniest of patients who have the potential for a full and healthy life. I was impressed with the cutting-edge technology that was required to help with their care. Many babies are in the NICU for a few weeks or months and we develop close relationships with their families. Some of the first patients I have cared for are reaching early adulthood and are now entering college. It is truly rewarding to hear the followup from parents and to meet my former patients, now fully grown.
