Introduction

Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors identify families at risk for birth defects or genetic disease, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, and analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family. Genetic counselors also serve as patient advocates and refer individuals to community or state support services.

Background

Originally from Minnesota, I earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Neuroscience and Psychology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. I spent the following year traveling through Africa, Europe and the United States, an exciting and culturally rich experience. While in the Genetic Counseling Program at the University of Pittsburgh I gained experience in pediatric, cancer, prenatal, adult and metabolic genetics and coordinated a clinical research study on preterm birth. I was fortunate to also participate in UCLID, a leadership training program in neurodevelopmental disabilities, an amazing opportunity that enriched my clinical practice. I am very excited to be here and look forward to practicing in the exciting field of medical genetics.

Recommendations

I value family-centered care, encouraging individuals to see themselves as members of their own healthcare team. I am dedicated to providing support, resources and accurate genetic and medical information to every family. As a genetic counselor I aim to provide individuals and families the tools necessary to make personal healthcare decisions.

Please feel welcome to contact me at (408) 972-3311 with any questions.
