Welcome to my home page.

I have been with the Dept of Psychiatry since 1979 and have had the privilege of working with a wide array of families who have impressed me with their sharing of strengths and struggles. Meeting new people, hearing their stories and then helping them make meaningful connections, working together to think “outside of the box" and discover new ways of understanding and interacting -- these are some of the reasons I continue in this field and in this setting. The process of child development and the different ways in which children and teens express themselves are fascinating, and I sometimes feel like a translator, helping parents make sense of these expressions.

Training and clinical social work education are two additional areas of professional interest, and I have held Field Faculty and Field Instructor appointments at Smith College School of Social Work, San Jose State University, and U.C. Berkeley. I direct the Social Work training program in our department of Psychiatry and participate in regular regional training activities.

In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors swimming, jogging, hiking, or backpacking and also spend time reading, looking at art, and listening to music.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
