My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a Physician Assistant (PA) with the Department of General Surgery. This means I am an extender to the physician/surgeon seeing patients in the clinic both before surgery and after, as well as perform excisions on patients with small lesions, assist in surgery, and round on patients in the hospital. I also participate in the call schedule which means I am available all day and night for 24 hours for emergencies. I chose health care because I enjoy working with people. I became a PA because of the versatility of the profession and I decided to go into surgery because I enjoy the definitive nature of surgical science.

My Practice Philosophy

Being a health care professional carries a great deal of responsibility with regards to assisting patients with medical difficulties both physically and emotionally. I believe being empathetic and compassionate are two of the most important aspects I offer to patients. Whether they have a complex medical situation like cancer or a straight forward problem like developing a hernia - patients need to be addressed with an appropriate level of commitment and understanding that we will work to offer the best medical care within our capabilities.

My Credentials

BA Biology San Francisco State University
PA Medicine University of California – San Francisco

My Tenure With Kaiser Permanente

Coming from the private sector prior to joining Kaiser Permanente in 2001, I have come to appreciate the broad multidisciplinary approach in tackling medical dilemmas that the physicians at Kaiser Permanente offer their patients that I did not observe in the private community. With services like tumor board and weekly radiology rounds, we are able to ask questions and receive feedback from other disciplines as what might be the best approach in treating a complex patient.

Why I Chose to Practice Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I really value the availability of information I can get from my large group of colleagues that help me offer the best treatment possible for the patient. Other important reasons are educational opportunities, information technology, research opportunities, fundamentally ethical approach, evidence-based, helpful staff, leadership by physicians, close cooperation with hospital, attention to quality, prevention, and close cooperation among physicians offering this unique "team approach".

Professional Interests & Affiliations

  • Member, American Association of Physician Assistants
  • Member, Sacramento Chapter of Physician Assistants

I have a broad professional interest in most surgical disciplines – general surgery, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery. I enjoyed doing research while in college and post- graduate school gaining recognition in a student research competition as an undergrad and becoming published during PA school.

On a Personal Note. . .

I am married with a wife and two daughters. I have strong interests in classical music and have played the piano since age eight. I am interested in global economics with a focus in both the American and foreign energy and currency markets. I am also interested in theoretical physics, most of which I do not understand but enjoy trying. I am an avid cyclist and exercise nut.
