How I came to the East Bay

Welcome to my web page and thanks for visiting. Originally born and raised in a small town named Hartland located in Michigan, I attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I moved to Los Angeles for surgical training at Harbor-UCLA, met my wife there, and finally obtained specialized training in colon and rectal surgery during my fellowship at the University of Minnesota. We then moved to northern California and live in the East Bay with our son.

Professional Interests

Although I am board certified in general surgery and enjoy treating a wide range of surgical problems, my area of specialization and clinical interest is Colon and Rectal Surgery. I like the breadth of the field and appreciate the excellent results that can be achieved with colon and rectal cancer when screening is coordinated with surgical resection. I am also excited about the potential for long-term relationships with patients who are struggling with inflammatory bowel diseases. I am a strong advocate of using sphincter-saving techniques and applying minimally invasive modalities such as single incision laparoscopy (SILS) whenever appropriate.

Clinically my special interests include transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) and high resolution anoscopy (HRA) for treatment of HPV related disease. TEM is a minimally invasive technique that allows select tumors and polyps in the rectum to be removed. The surgery is performed entirely within the rectum and when successfully completed does not leave the patient with any visible scars.

Philosophy

I strive to provide patients with the most accurate, honest information that will assist in their decision-making. I respect the rights of patients to make the decisions that are right for them and consistent with their values. It is my goal to deliver compassionate care in addition to high-quality surgical results.

Working at Kaiser provides the maximal potential for collaboration among physicians across several disciplines. I believe the best results are achieved when challenging problems are addressed through a multidisciplinary approach.

As sub-chief of general surgery at the Oakland Medical Center and secretary of the East Bay Medical executive committee, I also have administrative responsibilities that I find especially rewarding. I believe that Kaiser’s approach to the delivery of health care should be a model for the nation and I am happy to have the chance to continue to work to improve this system.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
