About Me

I have had the privilege of working for Kaiser for over 23 years! I came to the Psychiatry Department of the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center following graduate school at the University of Massachusetts and post-graduate training at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic. I feel fortunate to have made my professional home here because of the opportunities I have had to grow from working with a tremendous diversity of families and concerns and from a wonderful team of committed colleagues.

As a clinical psychologist, I work with kids of all ages to help address behavioral and emotional concerns. Parents may decide to seek counseling on their own or may be referred by a teacher or pediatrician. No referral is needed for an appointment in our department. Psychological help is sought when a child is unhappy and having difficulty getting along with others and/or succeeding in school. I like to think of two flavors to the unhappiness—the angry kind in which the child takes out frustrations on others and the more inward type where kids feel sad or worried. Sometimes, children struggle with both flavors of unhappiness. My challenge is to work creatively with the child to help them understand more of what they’re feeling and to find better ways to cope. I also believe strongly in the importance of meeting with parents to help them appreciate their child’s concerns and to find ways to respond to their child more effectively. Involving teachers and pediatricians when relevant is another part of my job.

I believe strongly in group therapy where people with similar concerns get to meet in order to support each other. It’s one thing to hear an idea from a psychologist, but often more effective when a teen hears it from another teen or a parent from another parent. I currently facilitate five groups: the Middle School Girls Group, the Family Worry Workshop, the Intensive Outpatient Program Parent Support Group and Multi-Family Group, and the Parenting Spirited Kids Group.

Part of what I enjoy most about my work is the inspiration I receive daily from families who are striving to improve their lives. It is a privilege to witness and support this process and often a lot of fun as well. Compassion, validation, curiosity and humor are the feelings I bring to my meetings with people and I enjoy the chance to support and guide my patients in achieving their goals. I am proud to work with a multi-disciplinary team which provides a terrific range of services for kids and families. I feel that Kaiser is on the cutting edge of providing mental health services and have experienced many innovations in services over my years here. I expect that desire to improve treatment to continue and look forward to contributing to it.

When not at work I like to re-charge my own batteries by reading, hiking, connecting with friends and family, and catching an occasional movie.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
