My Biography

Kaiser Permanente represents what all health care systems should embrace–preventive health, and I believe that this model can produce a lot of positive results for individuals, families, and communities. Kaiser Permanente’s innovative and integrative approach to health care allows me to educate, encourage, and guide individuals to a healthier way of life. I am thrilled to be apart of the health education department where I have the opportunity to work with many talented women who share their knowledge and expertise in a variety of fields.

My main concern is the rise in obesity in this country, and how it affects an individual’s whole life, as well as our current health care model. Holistic healing comes from educating and facilitating individuals into discovering and sustaining their own path to optimal health. This has brought me to organizations where I have been involved in developing after school programs for overweight and obese children, including physical activity, learning about healthy food alternatives, and confidence building. I also use Mindful-Nourishment techniques to educate adults on how to approach nutrition and eating in a way that satisfies the whole body. Recalling memories of how food is used for celebration, and why purchasing food from sustainable and local growers can make a difference in empowering one’s community.

I have a learning appetite for health and nutrition related topics, both from mainstream and professional journals. The foundation of my work and professional interest has been inspired by Weston A. Price, Health at Every Size, Alice Waters and the Slow Food Movement, Dr. Dean Ornish, and Marion Nestle PhD, and most recently Jamie Oliver and Michele Obama. The common thread that runs through each of these organizations represents the importance of whole foods and how that affects our overall health, and the health of our communities.
Two things I mentioned previously, preventive health, and community, the third is affordability. It is hard to do one without the other, and within the Health Education Department there are many classes offered at affordable prices that provide a structure and foundation for individual’s to make positive change for their own health.

I have a variety of interests that keep me outdoors in nature. My first love is alpine skiing. I have been a Level 2 instructor at Alpine Meadows since 1993. I also love to mountain bike, and feel so blessed with the variety of trails in Marin County. Taking long hikes to the ocean. I love to shop for food and cook; and I get such pleasure and gratitude when I can prepare a meal with all local and sustainable ingredients.

Yoga and meditation keeps the kinks out of my body, while quieting my mind and focusing my intentions. I do some aerobic exercise at least 4 times a week. I have a tight community of friends, and together we like to cook, laugh and play.
