About My Profession

I am a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Medicine. I provide primary care for my panel of patients as well as patients of my physician colleagues when they are unavailable. I enjoy the diversity of adult primary care in terms of the types of conditions that occur as well as the type of patient education needed. As a nurse practitioner, I am able to assess, diagnose, treat medical conditions and prescribe medications as a physician would. For conditions or problems that are beyond my scope of practice, I readily consult with my physician colleagues. Some of my patients have asked “why don’t you become a doctor” and I tell them that as a Nurse Practitioner, I have the best of both worlds. I have one foot in medicine and one foot in nursing and can readily move back and forth as needed. I feel that nursing was my calling in life. I am grateful for the opportunity to practice the art and science of nursing at the Kaiser Permanente Davis facility.

My Practice Philosophy

I believe that all patients are unique, although many may share common problems. The way in which each person responds to health and illness is very personal and individual. I welcome patients who come with information they have found from outside sources and support those who choose to use alternative treatments that are evidence-based. Teaching is one of my passions and I occasionally supervise Nurse Practitioner students who see my patients when they come in for appointments. Most of my patients enjoy being a part of the education process and benefit from having two practitioners consulting in their care.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been with Kaiser Permanente since 1997 and can't think of a better place to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser has been a great place to practice for so many reasons. I work with a great team of physicians who are supportive and highly skilled clinicians. I also work with a very competent and caring supportive staff of RNs and Medical Assistants. The resources available to all of us as providers are unparalleled. The ready access to specialists for consultation and direction of evidenced-based medicine is invaluable. The excellent education material, classes and computer resources for patients really enhance my ability to give patients accurate, and up to date information about health and illness. The availability of behavioral medicine consultants in primary care to facilitate lifestyle changes that promote health and help manage chronic conditions is unique and powerful. In addition to these resources, I also enjoy the opportunity to interact with other Nurse Practitioner peers throughout Kaiser.

On a Personal Note…

I grew up in Fresno, CA and graduated from CSU Fresno in 1982 with a BS in nursing. After working at Valley Medical Center in Fresno on a general med-surg unit, I moved to San Francisco in 1984. I worked at UC San Francisco on the Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant unit as a staff nurse, which was a very rewarding and challenging place to work. After working many years in this setting I realized that it was time to change direction and wanted to work with a less acute population of patients. It was at this point that I returned to school and received a Masters in Nursing specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1993. After graduating from UCSF I married and moved to Sacramento and held various positions from 1993 until 1997 when I was hired by Kaiser, and have found my niche.

I am happily married and we are blessed with two young daughters that keep us busy with school and extra curricular activities. I enjoy swimming, reading and spending time with family and friends. As many of you I am challenged by juggling family and work and strive for a healthy balance in my life. I look forward to working with you in striving for this balance as well.
