Welcome to my home page.
I am one of the senior partners in our department and have been administering anesthesia for more than twenty-five years. I was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, New York, where I lived until I was eighteen years old. New York was a great place to grow up. It was culturally diverse and challenging enough to build a foundation for lifelong success.
After high-school, I became the first in my family to attend college and I moved 1,000 miles west to enroll at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In the 60’s, Madison was a political hotbed with the Vietnam War. The politics were exciting, but I also enjoyed the athletics of the Big 10 Conference and have followed the Badgers ever since. I was fortunate to be in attendance at Rose Bowl victories in both 1999 and 2000.
After four cold years in Madison, I went south to attend medical school at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara-UAG) in Mexico. At that time, which was during the Vietnam War, there were more Americans attending the UAG than any medical school in the world. In the beginning it was a shock going to school outside the U.S., but it was also a humbling experience. After a while, I began to truly appreciate the language and culture of Mexico. Initially, I was like many Americans and didn’t invest the energy needed to explore a culture beyond my own. It just did not seem important. I grew to understand how self-centered my thinking was. My experience in Mexico was the catalyst for my growth as a person and has helped me become more sensitive to people from all backgrounds.
I also really enjoy being able to converse in Spanish and the opportunities it sometimes opens for me. It is rewarding when I am able to use my knowledge of Spanish to help my patients.
Why did I become an anesthesiologist?
There were many medical specialties for me to consider but the Operating Room always held the most excitement for me. As an Anesthesiologist, I have the opportunity to interact with all the surgical specialties. I also have the advantage of being able to care for all patients: the young and the old, the sick and the healthy. While taking care of patients I never have to be concerned about the time constraints that an office practice would present. Even if a surgery takes hours, I am involved one to one with my patient for the duration of the procedure. It has always been important to me to be able to spend as much time as necessary with each of my patients, one at a time.
Where did I receive my training?
After medical school, I completed my anesthesiology training at Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, New York. As the county hospital on Long Island, it was one of the largest, standing 19 stories tall, with over 600 beds. Since NCMC was a tertiary facility with a heliport, high-risk obstetrics, a level 3 neonatal unit, burn center, and even a hyperbaric chamber, it was an excellent place to grow in my practice. After my training, I worked at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre, New York, and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in Manhattan before moving to California.
Although, I practiced at many hospitals in the Bay Area including eight years at Highland General Hospital, the trauma center for Alameda County, I found a home at Kaiser. The Hayward and Freemont facilities are great places to practice medicine. We have the most advanced equipment in the Operating Room as well as some of the most skilled doctors working together as a team to get the best results for our patients.
What are your clinical interests and professional affiliations?
I am Board Certified in Anesthesiology and am a member of the American Board of Anesthesiologists, the California Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association.
Personal information:
I am married with a blended family. My stepchildren are in their late 20’s and I have a younger son who is home-schooled. I enjoy going to the theater and listening to the San Francisco symphony. We are fortunate to have so many activities in the Bay Area. Although traveling is my favorite passion and it has led me to destinations around the world, it always amazes me how lucky we are to live in California. Incredible diversity is within a few hours drive. Visiting the National Parks and hiking in some of the most beautiful places generally takes my breath away, especially at high altitudes.
I am very involved in the Beth Chaim Congregation, which is involved in a lot of charitable activities. During the spring and summer I play softball and my team won the White Division in a Walnut Creek league in 2005.
