Introduction

Hello, my name is Mark Spybrook; and I work as a Hospital-Based Specialist (aka Hospitalist) for Kaiser Permanente at the South Sacramento Medical Center. If you are checking this home page, either you or a close family member/ friend is under my care. Let me briefly review my role as your physician, along with my practice philosophy and other background.

What is a Hospitalist?

This term is given to physicians who focus on the care of patients requiring hospitalization. I do not have a clinic. When the patient is well enough to be discharged home, responsibility of care is transferred back to the primary care provider. In essence, I will act as the patient's primary care provider throughout the hospital course (including any time spent in the ICU).

My Practice Philosophy

I feel each patient and their family is special and unique. I will do my utmost to keep my patients and their families updated on the current status of medical issues, provide understandable explanations to test results, and obtain prompt consultation by surgical and medical subspecialists, when needed and indicated. Most importantly, I feel patients should not go home prematurely, and I will work vigilantly to prevent readmission and/or ER visits.

Background

I grew up on the eastside of Detroit, Michigan. I am the third of five sons, and my brothers and parents still reside in the Detroit area. I received a Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan, then attended Medical School at Wayne State University located in Detroit.

I was married during my second year of medical school, and subsequently chose a residency at UC Davis so we could be close to my wife's family (my wife grew up near Lodi, and my in-laws are winegrape growers there). My wife and I now have three wonderful children and reside in Acampo.

Outside Interests

Besides spending time with my wife and children, I also enjoy gardening (especially roses), hunting, sporting clay/trap shooting, snorkeling, golfing, and wine tasting/viticulture.

My Credentials

Medical school Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI
Residency UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
