I am native to southern California where I attended college, medical school, and residency. I was a part of an accelerated undergraduate baccalaureate in biomedical sciences from University of California at Riverside and medical degree from University of California at Los Angeles where I also completed a Thesis in Neurosurgery (Brain Tumors). I attended surgical internship and neurosurgical training also at University of California at Los Angeles, where I also performed extra sub-specialty training in Functional and Stereotactic Neurosurgery as well as Radiosurgery.
I was successful as part of a private practice in southern California. I became drawn to Kaiser Permanente Redwood City because of its comprehensive neurosurgical services as a neuroscience center. The multidisciplinary structure and solid infrastructure allow neurosurgeons to practice in a tertiary care setting with both simple and complex ailments to the benefit of the patients. Kaiser Permanente allows this setting of excellent practice with the elimination of the “business” aspects of private practice clouding the picture. Indeed, Kaiser Permanente has been shown to be in the forefront as a national leader in healthcare.
Functional neurosurgery is a rapidly growing sub-specialty in neurosurgery. It involves treatments that restore quality of life to many patients suffering from a wide array of diseases. In fact, many patients don’t even know that these treatments are even present. I treat patients with a wide variety of complex neurosurgical problems in addition to those who suffer from movement disorders (essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, and dystonia), epilepsy, and pain. Not only do we want to be leaders in the treatment of these diseases for our patients, but we want to lead the neurosurgical community with care for expanding indications such as various psychiatric disorders.
My patients are my priority. I have dedicated much of my life to being trained in this endeavor, and I’m here to help. I enjoy getting to know my patients personally and treating the whole patient, outlining clear indications and reasons why treatments may or may not help. It is also a myth, for the most part, that we can only treat Kaiser Permanente Insured patients. We often do treat patients with outside insurances.
Research interests are varied and include brain imaging (diffusion tensor imaging and directionally colored fractional anisotropy), tumor identification, aneurysm analysis, radiosurgery, and various spine studies. Research makes the clinician think in a more comprehensive manner, helping our patients directly and guiding future therapies. In addition, I have also put together a comprehensive neurosurgery board review manual while I was a resident.
As a childhood deacon, I enjoy attending church when I can. In addition, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, swimming, and playing basketball.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
