My Qualifications
I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and went to college at Miami University (this is the one in Ohio). I received my medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed my residency with the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center (UCLA). I completed my fellowship in Genetics with Yale University. I had choices of jobs in Genetics at medical schools or at Kaiser. I chose Kaiser because my interests are clearly related to treating patients rather than working in a lab. I came to Kaiser in July of 1979. I am board certified in Clinical Genetics and Clinical Biochemical Genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and board certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. For several years now I have been selected as one of the “Best Doctors in America” for Genetics. I am also Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UC Davis School of Medicine. One of the reasons I chose Genetics is because I like to know things most other doctors don’t know. Those of us who are geneticists at Kaiser are clinicians, not researchers. We treat patients full time because this is what gives us the most satisfaction.
My Healthcare Practice
Genetics is fast becoming an important part of the general practice of medicine. It no longer is a field that focuses only on very rare conditions. Genetic technology plays a significant role in safeguarding the health of the fetus during pregnancy and the health of the newborn. In addition, genetic factors are becoming more and more important in understanding different types of cancers and other adult diseases. Furthermore, treatment of genetic conditions has become a reality for a growing number of disorders. This is a very exciting time to be a geneticist!
The ability to access medical information both online and through the excellent Medical Library system has provided the most current information available for our patients. Among the best web sites we refer our patients to is MEDLINE PLUS which offers clear information in English and Spanish. Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man provides comprehensive information of a medical nature for those conditions known to be genetically determined.
I want my patients and their families to know that I will do my best to find answers for their problems. I appreciate the trust my patients put in me. Much of the time, outcomes and testing are normal and this is a time of joy. Unfortunately, we sometimes are faced with situations where the outcome is pessimistic. In these difficult circumstances, I will do everything in my power to help you understand what you are facing, understand the options available to you, and work with you to handle the sadness and grief.
Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente
Kaiser is a wonderful place to get health care. I have been at Kaiser more than 25 years and during this time I have seen the quality and expertise of the physicians get better and better. Survey after survey shows Kaiser to be a great place to get health care. Medical decisions are made by doctors and cost is not a major factor in determining what tests get ordered. If I want to order a test, it gets done.
My Outside Interests
I have a wife and three kids. My kids are relatively young, which means I have many years of school left to pay for, and that I will not be retiring for years to come! I have always loved music and have sung in groups and choirs since high school days. Being a child of the 60s, I play guitar and folk sing. However, I find great pleasure in listening to Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett. I have begun to play golf again after quitting the sport over 10 years ago (I've not gotten any better)!
