Welcome to my home page!
If you have been referred to the neuro-oncology specialty service at Redwood City, chances are that you or a loved one are facing many difficult challenges right now –coping with the diagnosis of a brain or spine malignancy is frightening and life changing. Others who have been referred for my service may have a “benign” condition of the brain or spine, but one that may interfere with normal activities and thus requires treatment and ongoing follow-up. I hope my webpage gives you an introduction to my practice so that you may feel safe and confident in the specialty neuro-oncology care you will receive with Kaiser Permanente.
I am a Texan through-and-through. Yes, I still have the Southern accent… some things never change. I was born and raised in rural West Texas, where my family still resides. I first became a registered nurse in 1995, in Texas, working in a variety of oncology settings through the years.
I later received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from UCLA, where I focused my graduate education in adult oncology. The focus of my clinical education was neuro-oncology. I chose to emphasize my education in neuro-oncology for a variety of reasons. The first was the commitment to technical and specialized work with close involvement with patients and families. I also liked the multidisciplinary neuro-oncology approach to providing high quality care, in the rapidly advancing sciences of pharmacology, genomics, molecular diagnostics, and other critical bench-work. Today's advances in medicine have led to remarkable progress in the diagnosis, treatment, and improvement to the overall survival and quality of life for patients with central nervous system cancers. I really felt that I could be personally challenged to stay abreast of current research, and that I could bring my desire “to the bedside” to advocate for high quality cutting-edge oncologic care for my patients in neuro-oncology. I spent time as a NP-student working clinically with world renowned neuro-oncologists at MD Anderson Cancer Center, USC Medical Center, and UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Peak and I first became acquainted in 2005 after he completed a neuro-oncology fellowship at UCLA. I joined the UCLA neuro- oncology group as a nurse practitioner.
I Joined Kaiser Permanente in 2008, to build a collaborative neuro-oncology practice with Dr. Scott Peak with the goals of providing high-quality, accessible, and cutting-edge care to Kaiser Permanente members diagnosed with brain or spinal tumors. The integrated delivery of services within Kaiser Permanente allows our members access to the best quality treatments, both standard and investigational therapies, with care providers having up-to-date computerized health information that immediately impacts clinical decision making and ultimately results in improved patient care.
I look forward to meeting you and your family and to being a resource and provider for your ongoing health needs.
