My Biography

Kaiser Permanente San Francisco offers such a diverse array of non-pharmacological approaches to mental health which can either augment or supplant standard pharmacotherapies. The emphasis on alternative approaches to mental well being truly distinguishes KPSF, including our various specialized meditation and exercise programs.

I was an Associate Professor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. I continue to maintain Adjunct status there. I have many years of experience studying the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders. My interests include exploring how genetic information can best be integrated into clinical psychiatry as we enter the era of personalized genomic medicine. I am very interested in studies comparing the effectiveness of various medications with non-pharmacological therapeutic interventions. Currently, I am continuing my research on the genetic basis of autism, a project I started in Costa Rica many years ago.

I THRIVE by working out (I am especially fond of the flying trapeze) and meditating daily. When I was younger, I spent some time living in a Zen Monastery in Japan and have found returning to daily practice to be extremely beneficial. During my free time, I do science consulting for film and theater groups, and I like to run or stroll through the streets with my two French bulldogs.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
