Background:
I was born in Guangzhou, China, and came to the United States when I was ten years old. I grew up in a Chinese immigrant family, which, like many other Chinese families, had always believed in using integrated East-West medicine when it comes to healthcare. Prior to becoming a healthcare practitioner, I had worked as a software engineer in the fast-paced high-tech world. When I later discovered that my true passion was in helping myself and others achieve a greater balance in life through mind-body approaches to health maintenance, I changed my career to become a licensed acupuncturist.
I received my B.S. degree in Computer Science from University of California, Davis, and M.S. degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Five Branches University, Santa Cruz. Practicing acupuncture allows me to combine my interests in both fields by enabling me to work with what I call the “internet” within the human body, which consists of the network of “energy channels” (also known as acupuncture meridians). This “internet” of the body, when combined with the power of the mind, enables the body to heal itself. The amazing potential of our mind-body connection for self-healing is very powerful. Hence, I integrate mind-body techniques in my acupuncture treatments and encourage you to use them at home as well. These mind-body techniques include acupressure, mindfulness meditation and therapeutic exercises.
Besides body acupuncture, I also offer auricular acupuncture as an alternative for patients who fear needles. Auricular acupuncture uses non-invasive seeds instead of needles to stimulate acupuncture points in the outer ear.
A balanced diet, adequate exercise, and quality sleep are important factors to good health. In addition, equally essential ingredients to optimal mind-body well-being are three positive mental attributes which I call the three “Vitamin L’s”:
Learn – The desire for life-long learning keeps our minds young and active.
Love – Loving life and appreciating all the goodness that life offers us keeps our souls happy.
Laugh – Amongst many health benefits, laughter relaxes many of our muscles, reduces pain and speeds up healing. As the old saying goes, “laughter is the best medicine.”
Your path to wellness requires dedication and teamwork. I encourage you to actively participate in your own healing process. I am honored to be a part of your healthcare team at Kaiser Permanente to support you on your journey.
