My Biography
I really admire Kaiser Permanente’s holistic approach to medical care—not to mention the fact that their Chemical Dependency Benefit is one of the best in the field today. Our department has been on the cutting edge of chemical dependency treatment for years. I also really appreciate the cultural diversity in the city of San Francisco and Kaiser’s efforts to provide culturally competent services to all the various populations. Areas of particular fascination for me include the growing interest and research that speaks to process addictions and their impact on the chemically-dependent individual and their family (gambling, shopping, food, love and sex, etc.).
I am inspired by the caliber of people I work with here at the Chemical Dependency Recovery Program. They are all committed and compassionate people. It’s rewarding to realize that I have the opportunity--with the client’s readiness to change, of course--to make a big difference in people’s lives. Most people come to treatment with a mixture of feelings: shame, depression, anger, anxiety. Patients appreciate the fact that we understand many of their issues and that we do not judge them for struggling with dependency issues. I enjoy working with our multidisciplinary team of addiction medicine professionals. So many misconceptions about addictive disease abound, so it is especially satisfying that, in our department, we are all in alignment with how to work with chemically-dependent people and their families. Families are often in as much distress as the chemically-dependent patient. We offer a comprehensive Family Program. We know that the chances for recovery increase when the whole family is involved in treatment, and to that end groups, individual counseling and referrals to community resources can have as great an impact on the family as our program has for the chemically-dependent loved one.
Patients should know that we are able to assist them in navigating Kaiser’s abundant resources within the system. One amazing resource is Behavioral Health; for instance, Mindfulness Training, Anger Management, and Couple’s Communication. Additionally, the disease of chemical dependency is sometimes coupled with mental health problems. Due to our relationship with the Psychiatry department, we are able to help people weigh their options.
My hobbies outside of work include walks on the beach and along the Bay; jazz music, theatre, museums, hiking, meditation with spiritual community, and personal growth and development. I THRIVE through practicing yoga, walking daily, eating locally-grown organic foods as often as I can, taking whole-food vitamins, and drinking a lot of water along with green tea. I also think dogs are amazing creatures and they improve our capacity to love and be loved!

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
