How to Use My Home Page...

My Biography

I chose to become a genetic counselor back in the early 80’s when the profession was just emerging. I was intrigued by a career that would blend the arts of listening, communicating and educating with the understanding of complex scientific information. While my background spans a range of experiences, I am especially interested in ultrasound abnormalities, newborn screening, and inherited metabolic diseases. Some of the conditions are treatable and we can find ways to “trick” the body into a creative, workaround solution. The ability to work closely with these patients and their families for many years is a huge benefit.

As a genetic counselor, I want the individuals, families, and other healthcare providers with whom I interact to feel that they are getting their questions answered and their needs met, while being treated with dignity and respect. I take pride in going the extra mile and will do what it takes to ensure that the Kaiser Permanente members facing difficult choices involving genetic issues have the necessary information and support to make personal decisions that are comfortable for them.

I think Kaiser Permanente’s strength lies in its multidisciplinary approach to complex diseases. Our Genetics department regularly receives referral cases from Santa Rosa to Redwood City. With the advent of Health Connect electronic charting system, coordinating care with providers across specialties, and even in different Kaiser Permanente facilities, is easy and immensely beneficial for both provider and patient.

Outside of work, I keep active and healthy by working out most days, eating sensibly, laughing a lot, and trying not to allow stress to get the upper hand. I play tennis in a Marin County league. My husband works for a fitness company, which is a marvelous complement to my lifestyle. I am an avid sports fan and a faithful viewer of Sportscenter on the ESPN networks. I am also trying to improve my Spanish skills.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
