I have been part of the Kaiser Permanente system since 1996, starting as a Senior Physical Therapist with Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara. I transferred to Kaiser Permanente Vacaville in 1998 and have held multiple positions within the department including 3 years working in the Occupational Medicine Department.
My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from California State University at Northridge and a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Baylor University. I completed my transitional Clinical Doctorate in 2008 through Baylor University. I am also a graduate of the Kaiser Permanente Hayward Advanced Orthopedic and Manual Therapy Residency.
I am a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and am Board Certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. I am also recognized as a Fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy.
Why Choose Physical Therapy?
Patients are inundated with choices when it comes to the care of musculoskeletal or neuromuscular injuries. The laundry list available includes physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, athletic trainers, Pilate’s instructors, generic exercise sheets, and of course the relative or close friend “who had the same problem”. The question that arises is "To whom shall I trust to provide me with the best treatment?" When considering a physical therapist, typically the first image that comes to mind is a person who applies modalities such as ultrasound (a deep heating modality), electrical stimulation, moist heat packs or a prescriber of various strengthening and stretching exercises. Though physical therapists are educated in understanding the anatomy, physiology and physics associated with such treatments, their knowledge of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular injuries extend far beyond the scope of simply applying a prescribed treatment modality. The profession of physical therapy has grown beyond arbitrary exercise prescriptions. Physical therapists are trained to take a history of patient symptoms to identify what functional loss a patient maybe experiencing and how the disability affects a person during the course of daily living. A solid musculoskeletal/neuromuscular examination helps a therapist identify physical impairments, which interfere with normal daily function. Once impairments are identified, a specific treatment program is designed. Your active participation in the treatment plan is the critical component of a successful physical therapy encounter. So when reviewing your list of “Whom shall I trust?”... exercise your options and see a physical therapist. We’re good people to know!
