About Me
I joined the Genetics Department at Kaiser Oakland Medical Center in 2009 and am thrilled to contribute to the outstanding, collaborative genetics care that our department provides.
A San Francisco native, I enjoy living in the city and staying active with fitness classes, yoga, running, biking, playing tennis and long walks along the Embarcadero and through San Francisco's colorful neighborhoods. I also have a passion for the arts, particularly modern art, theater, classical music, jazz and dance; as well as the joys of food and wine—both cooking at home with healthy, fresh ingredients and sampling foods of every ethnic variety at restaurants throughout the Bay Area. I grew up with a family wine production in Napa Valley and remain very tied to that beautiful and rejuvenating region.
Why I chose genetics
I became interested in genetics in college, and subsequently completed a masters at the University of Cambridge in molecular (or laboratory) genetics. The genetics of human disease captured my attention throughout medical school at Mount Sinai in New York, and I continued there in a combined residency program incorporating pediatrics, adult medicine and the clinical and laboratory sides of medical genetics. Medical genetics is one of the most diverse and quickly evolving specialties, one that emphasizes education, cooperation and significant relationships with patients and families.
Genetics encompasses research science; laboratory diagnostics; counseling about the inheritance and detection of genetic conditions; and monitoring or treating patients with genetic variations (or mutations) that lead to abnormalities in the external shape or internal metabolic processes of the body. Since our genes encode the instructions for how each cell assembles into an organ and functions properly, I get to keep my focus very broad, evaluating every part of the body from head to toe and through every stage of life from conception to old age.
My particular interest is in our growing understanding of how genes across all of our DNA—our genome—interact with each other or environmental factors and influence health. This new branch of genetics is called genomic or personalized medicine: the use of genetic information to better predict and prevent disease and to select more effective treatments on an individual basis. You can learn more about genomic medicine at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website.
How to prepare for your appointment
The most important tools of the geneticist are a detailed family medical history and a complete personal medical history. Research you can do prior to your appointment to identify the medical conditions (with ages at diagnosis) and ethnic background of your family members will be very helpful. Please see the overview of family history on our NorCal Genetics website as guide. As much detail in your or your child's medical history as possible (particularly if you or your child have not always been a Kaiser patient) will also be critical for a successful genetics evaluation.
Feel free to browse through the introduction to genetics and specific topics on our website. I look forward to meeting you and helping you understand genetics and its role in your health!
