About Me..

I became a physician in order to combine my interests in science with my desire to work with people. After graduating from medical school at UC San Francisco and completing my internship and residency at Stanford University Hospital, I came to work for Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center in 1982. I worked for many years as an Internist in the out-patient clinic but now I serve our members as an In-Patient Hospitalist. Currently the majority of my clinical time is spent admitting patients to the hospital through the Emergency department and caring for patients on the medical wards. In addition to in-patient hospital work, I am director of the treadmill laboratory and have also spent a considerable amount of time involved in the management of chronic pain syndromes.

I believe that the keys to good outcomes in medicine are patient education and involvement. Informed decision making, for example, would allow patients to take control of their medical care and to assume primary responsibility for their own health. It is the duty of the physician to communicate, educate and guide the patient through the complexities of the medical system.

When I am not at work I enjoy traveling, sports, animals, reading and good restaurants. My recommendation for my patients is to be good to themselves.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
