My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a health psychologist. A health psychologist provides support, feedback and information to people in order to improve health and wellness. By changing behaviors, lifestyle, and thinking styles, people can feel better, improve health, increase self-care skills, and better adjust to chronic illness.

I decided to follow this career path because of the strong evidence suggesting that mind/body medicine approaches could be safe, effective, and empowering. I have specialized in pain management for most of my career because helping people with this difficult problem is rewarding.

My Practice Philosophy

My goal is to provide patients with support, information, and feedback that will make a difference in their quality of life. I try to stay informed so that the information I provide regarding pain and pain management is current and relevant to real life. I have learned over the years that everyone's pain experience is different. I try to listen and provide relevant feedback based on each person's unique medical and personal background.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

During my senior year of college, I spent a semester as an extern for an innovative program at Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Oregon. I was part of an interdisciplinary team assisting Kaiser Permanente members to improve nutrition and physical activity. Nearly 20 years later, I joined the Kaiser Permanente team as a psychologist specializing in health psychology. I worked in primary care in Davis from 2002-2009 and joined the chronic pain management team in 2009.

Why I Choose to Practice Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I choose to work here because of the unique opportunity to work in multidisciplinary programs that are evidence-based and innovative. Also, electronic records and other resources allow me to provide better, more efficient care.

On a Personal Note

While an undergraduate student, I researched the effects of physical exercise on emotional well-being. I continued to pursue training and research in behavioral medicine while obtaining my Ph.D. in clinical psychology. After completing my internship and post doctoral training I joined the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) faculty. While at MUSC, I worked primarily in the area of pain management. Over the years, I have learned a lot about coping with pain and medical conditions. I was thankful to have the opportunity to return to Kaiser Permanente where my career pursuits began. Assisting members in achieving their goals of improved health and well being has been a rewarding and gratifying experience. I try to practice what I preach by balancing work with other meaningful life activities. I especially enjoy outdoor activities such as gardening, skiing, and cycling.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
