Welcome to My Home Page!

I view this page as a nice way to introduce myself to my patients.

This page is also your gateway to . . .

In addition, you can connect with our on-line appointment and prescription services.

If you are not yet registered, I encourage you to do so and try out these services.

One of our newest and most helpful services is our on-line personal physician selection service, which provides you with up-to-date information on which providers have open panels (by location) with links to their biographic information and to their web-sites. If you do not have a primary care provider, or if you are interested in switching primary care providers, please check out this helpful service.

About Me

I was born and raised in San Jose, leaving to go south for college. I enjoy swimming, cross country skiing, baking, going to plays, rowing, mountain biking and reading novels. I have an eleven year old son who loves animals, is active in sports and enjoys science and math in school.

I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a major in physical education and started graduate studies in exercise physiology at the University of Iowa. It was a wonderful experience but the most important thing I learned was that I enjoyed working with people – so a career in research was not a good fit. I got a position teaching exercise physiology, biomechanics, and physical education and enjoyed coaching the swim team at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. I found that I really enjoyed teaching and I continue to teach doctors, nurse practitioner students, and diabetes educators, but I wanted to be able to more directly help people. With my background in exercise physiology, my peers in medical school asked me if I was going to go into sports medicine and my reply was that I wanted to help sick people get better not healthy people perform better.

My Credentials

Medical school Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI
Internship Kaiser Foundation Hospital, San Francisco, CA
Residency Kaiser Foundation Hospital, San Francisco, CA
Fellowship Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, La Jolla, CA
Board certification Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, American Board of Internal Medicine

Why Endocrinology?

My interest in hormones started when my closest friend in college had a thyroid problem (I even had a chance to be her endocrinologist when I was in my fellowship)! I then took a wonderful endocrine physiology class at the University of Iowa and knew that if I went to medical school that I would pursue a fellowship in it. I enjoy endocrinology because I get to have a long-term relationship with the majority of my patients and most of the diseases can be controlled or cured resulting in improved quality of life.

Why Kaiser Permanente?

I did my residency at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco and felt that Kaiser Permanente provided the most comprehensive care with a focus on prevention and a strong sense of community. I feel fortunate that when I decided to return to Northern California in 1993, I was able to get a position in Walnut Creek. Kaiser Permanente has also allowed me the opportunity to directly improve how we care for our patients by being the Diablo Service Area Diabetes Champion and the Walnut Creek and Park Shadelands Cholesterol and Hypertension Champion. I have also been on the Northern California Regional Medical Weight Management Committee since 1995. At the end of 2004, I started managing an inpatient diabetes team to optimize the care of our hospitalized diabetic patients. To keep up to date on endocrine issues, I am a member of the American Diabetes Association, the Endocrine Society, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

To Get the Most Out of Our Consultation or Follow-up Appointment

  • Please try to arrive at my office about 15 minutes before your appointment. This will allow time for registration and for my staff to get your vital signs such as blood pressure and weight.
  • Please bring copies of any important outside records that might be helpful.
  • Please bring a list of your current medications and their doses or the actual pill bottles themselves.
  • If you have diabetes, please bring a current log of your recent home blood glucose tests.

Let me introduce the other members of the Endocrinology Division

I work with four wonderful Endocrinologists in the Diablo Service Area Endocrine Division. In order to provide you with better endocrinology service, we have developed a unique system to provide cross coverage.

When I am away from the office, one of my endocrinology colleagues covers for me. He reviews my incoming messages, laboratory results, radiology reports, and refill requests using our new computer systems. If an issue requires urgent attention, he will handle the situation - frequently over the phone. If you require an urgent appointment, he can help arrange one for you at the closest Kaiser Permanente facility or at his office.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
