About Me

My background in both medicine and engineering began as an undergraduate where I double majored in both biological sciences and mechanical engineering at Stanford University. I later performed my medical training at Harvard Medical School where I graduated in 1990 after taking a year off to do engineering development of new surgical laser systems.

After completing my Orthopedic Residency at UC Davis, I completed two years of fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital before returning to UC Davis as an Assistant Professor specializing in Adult Reconstructive Orthopedics. My practice focused on complex primary and revision total joint surgery. My academic laboratory studied the use of photochemistry for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. I also continued to perform engineering work in conjunction with scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories with whom I later helped to establish the National Science Foundation national Center for Biophotonics.

After four years of practice at UC Davis, I returned home to the Bay Area and joined Kaiser in Oakland. I continue to focus my practice on Adult Reconstructive Orthopedics. The flexibility of the Kaiser system has allowed me to balance my clinical practice with multiple academic and engineering pursuits. I am pleased to be working at the Orthopedic department at Kaiser Oakland where we have an especially skilled and talented group of surgeons, and where we have the opportunity to continue to teach residents from the St Mary’s Orthopedic program.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
