My Specialty and Why I Chose It
I am a genetic counselor. This means that I educate families and individuals who are at risk for genetic conditions base on their family history or other factors. This includes reviewing the family and personal medical histories, discussing the various risk factors, coordinating the available screenings and tests as appropriate, and explaining any test results. I went into this field because of the advancement of our genetic knowledge in medicine is changing the health care system. Genetic counselors are able to explain difficult concepts to patients and help them through stressful and often emotional times.
My Practice Philosophy
I value honesty, open-mindedness, and clarity. This is what I focus on during my counseling sessions and interactions with my patients. I try to be as clear and concise about the information discussed to make sure that the information is understood. The emotional aspect involved in certain cases is also important to address and spend some time on if the patient chooses to do so. My job is to help individuals and families make whatever decisions are best for them in their particular situation.
My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente
I have been a member of Kaiser since 2006. Kaiser offers great services and support to their patients, and I wanted to be a part of that.
Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente
The physicians whom I work for have a great deal of respect for genetic counselors and allow us a great deal of independence to counsel our patients as we feel appropriate. They are a great resource, as well as the team of other counselors who are all within the same area. With a wide range of backgrounds and specialties, our department has a very diverse group that makes for a wonderful and stimulating working environment. Kaiser also supports continuing education.
My Professional Interests and Affiliations
I became Board Certified through the American Board of Genetic Counseling in 2005. I am a full member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, and am also a part of the prenatal special interest group.
On a Personal Note…
I am originally from Washington state and have also lived in California, Colorado, and Illinois. I attended college at the University of Washington in Seattle, where I received a double degree in Psychology and Biology. I went to graduate school in Chicago, at Northwestern University where I got my Masters in Genetic Counseling. In addition to my training in genetics and counseling through school programs, I also spent time working in the Genetics Department at the University of Washington Medical Center. After school, I moved to Sacramento and worked as a prenatal genetic counselor for two years prior to coming to Kaiser.
