Welcome to My Home Page!

I was born in Bangalore, India and moved to the United States as a child. As a psychiatrist, I have worked in a variety of settings, including outpatient and inpatient treatment, in long-term residential treatment for children, and in a school day treatment program. In the past I have worked at Kaiser Permanente, Martinez and also at Kaiser Permanente in Ohio. I have greatly enjoyed all these settings and truly consider it a privilege to work with patients and families to improve mental health.

I have always been fascinated by listening to people’s life stories and how they have shaped who they are. I particularly love working with children and families. As medical school graduation approached in 1986, I finally decided on a career in child and adolescent psychiatry because I found it to be most intellectually exciting. Many people do not realize that psychiatry is a medical specialty. My medical training allows me to understand the interactions of medical, biological, genetic, as well as environmental and psychological factors in the development of behavioral and emotional problems. Also, as a psychiatrist, I am trained to prescribe medication, in addition to using other treatment options. I am board certified in both adult, and child & adolescent psychiatry, and consider myself a family psychiatrist. I am a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

As a parent myself, I understand the many challenges of parenting. At various times, as my own children have grown, I have worked part-time, full-time, and even full-time as a stay-at-home mom. I have spent many hours volunteering in their schools and extra-curricular activities. Being a child and adolescent psychiatrist has certainly helped me as a parent, but even more importantly, being a parent has helped me be a better child psychiatrist.

One of my philosophies in practice is “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is particularly helpful in child and adolescent psychiatry, where treating children and families early in the course of psychiatric symptoms can help get the child more quickly back to optimal development. My goal in treatment is to bring the child/teen back to the point of being able to make the most of his/her potential in life. I believe in the vital importance of educating families about the psychiatric disorders they are facing. I know that if we all (family, child/teen, other health care providers, and myself) work as a team, we can greatly improve the outcome. Treatment of most disorders in psychiatry takes a “multi-modal” approach. Depending on the disorder, this often means a combination of interventions, such as talking therapies, medication, and specific interventions at school and home.

I look forward to working closely with my families!
