I’m Dr. Katie Parafinczuk, DPT with the Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy Department at Redwood City Medical Center. Let me tell you a little about myself and why I love Physical Therapy.

I grew up just outside of Albany, NY and enjoyed an active lifestyle trail running, competing in track and field, and skiing with my family. I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology from Emory University in 2007. After taking a year to work in the field of private practice as a PT tech, I went onto receive my Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Arcadia University in 2011.

During my time at Arcadia University I was able to receive clinical education in sport’s/orthopedics, acute care, and neurological movement disorders including Parkinson’s Disease, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, and Brain Injury.

I moved out to the Bay area in the spring of 2011 and was thrilled to join Kaiser Permanente in Redwood City. I work in both the outpatient and inpatient setting which gives me a good understanding of the continuum of rehabilitation. I am an active member in the American Physical Therapy Association and the Neurology section of the APTA.

What I value about physical therapy is the opportunity to work one-on-one with my patients and experience the positive changes that affect their everyday function and movement. I try to incorporate patients’ interests into their physical therapy activities to make healing a more enjoyable experience.

Outside of my career I enjoy running marathons, cooking, and traveling. Some of my most enjoyable trips have been my road trip across the United States and a two month backpacking trip through New Zealand.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
