My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I have been a nurse practitioner (NP) for women's health at Kaiser Permanente since 1979. In July 2000, I made the difficult decision to give up my general OB-GYN practice and focus on my role as a fertility department team member. I now provide care for women and their partners who desire fertility evaluation and treatment.

My Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree Nursing Sacramento State University
Nurse Practitioner Certificate Family Planning University of California, San Francisco
Nurse Practitioner Certificate Maternity University of California, San Francisco
OBGYN Ultrasound Advanced Certificate Sacramento City College

My Practice Philosophy

I have always believed in preventive health care. I believe each individual patient (or couple) comes for care with different needs, expectations and resources. I do my best to educate, respect and involve each woman (and her partner) in her health care decisions and treatment plans. I understand how emotional this challenge is and have a lot of compassion for these women.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

Before I became a nurse practitioner, I worked at Kaiser Permanente as a staff nurse in newborn nursery, postpartum and labor and delivery. I also worked as a clinical nursing instructor in the women's hospital at LAC- USC Medical Center and at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles. I was a clinical instructor of obstetrics at Sacramento State College for 5 semesters. I have practiced as a nurse practitioner in women's health since 1979. I've been involved in reproductive health since 1989.

Over the years, our fertility clinic has grown immensely. Our team has also grown and is composed of an outstanding group of nurse practitioners and physicians. We are able to jointly care for our patients and their partners. We collaborate and share goals and treatments plans with one another. This provides our patients with the greatest opportunity to achieve their goal of pregnancy and birth. Because we have the perinatology, genetics, women's health and medicine departments readily available to our patients, we can provide the best care possible. I love to teach and am able to do so on a regular basis both formally (in a classroom) and informally (in the clinic). I am also a guest lecturer for nursing students at nearby colleges.

On a Personal Note

I've been married since 1978. We have two grown children. My husband and I love to travel and have been to Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean and many wonderful places in these United States and Canada. I love music and play the piano. I also enjoy gardening and anything that involves being outside in the sunshine. I am fairly crafty and enjoy needlework/knitting.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
