Welcome you to my home page.

In addition to learning a little bit more about me, you will also find telephone numbers to our Department of Psychiatry as well as my office hours. At the left-hand side, I have included useful website links to general mental health and eating disorder resources, which you are welcome to explore.

My name is Katie Bell and I am a Nurse Practitioner here in Redwood City at the Department of Psychiatry. I work with both adults and teenagers in our general department and have also developed a specialty working with eating disordered patients.

I joined The Permanente Medical Group in February of 2007, after working several years for UCSF at San Francisco General Hospital’s Psychiatric Emergency Services. I am enjoying my work here for several reasons. Thanks to Kaiser’s computerized healthcare delivery system, I can coordinate our work together with all of your Kaiser providers. This allows me to provide you with very comprehensive and safe care. Kaiser is also known for seeking highly qualified candidates across all departments, and I am honored to be working alongside these healthcare leaders. Finally, I believe that Kaiser truly cares about the health and wellness of both their patients and employees as evidenced by the organization’s emphasis on preventative medicine through education and outreach.

My functions in this department include providing medical and psychiatric evaluations to patients who are participating in our Eating Disorders Intensive Outpatient Program (EDIOP), as well as medication evaluations for patients in our general department. As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I carefully evaluate the benefits and potential risks of indicated medications before prescribing.

My professional background is quite diverse: I have an undergraduate degree in Economics and spent many years working as a businesswoman in the retail, securities, and telecommunications industries. In 1999, I returned to my lifelong passion of biology and psychology and went on to receive a dual Nurse Practitioners degree in Adult Medicine and Psychiatric Mental Health from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2003.

I enjoy my Nurse Practitioner role as it aligns with my personal philosophy: providing individualized care that emphasizes prevention, education and wellness for my patients. I believe this is particularly well suited to individuals struggling with a mental illness, as patients often report significant difficulty understanding and managing their mental health issues. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than assisting patients to identify and learn about these issues, so that they may experience greater happiness, inner peace and fulfillment in their lives.

I have many personal interests, although finding more recently that I have become enamored with playing the guitar. I also maintain a meditation and yoga practice and spend time with family and friends, which I enjoy most of all.

Thank you for taking the time learning about me. I look forward to learning more about you should we have the opportunity to meet.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
