DEAR PATIENTS:

Welcome to my Internet Home Page. This site is designed to provide you with information about myself and how to access care in Rheumatology. Please take the time to get familiar with my home page. I hope you will find it to be a useful resource for your healthcare needs and information. I plan to add to it on a regular basis, primarily with educational information, as well as with references to other useful sites; so stop back periodically, and let me know if it needs updating, and how it could be of most use to you.

ABOUT MYSELF

I was born on the East coast where my father’s family lives and where my father, also a physician, did his training. I was raised in Michigan where my mother’s side of the family resides, then moved to Arizona in 1977 when my father took the position as head of Pediatrics at the local community hospital. I obtained my medical degree from University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, AZ, and did my first year of training there, then completed my residency via University of California, San Francisco at Fresno, CA. Rheumatology fellowship was done at University of California, Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA and it was these ties to the Central Valley that led to my becoming established here at Kaiser Permanente in Modesto. My primary practice is rheumatology.

My interests outside of medicine include spending time with my extended family, gardening, sailing (if I could only overcome the motion sickness), anything horse related, and foreign travel. I especially appreciate people who are open-minded which seems to come easiest to those who are multicultural. I am forever working to improve my language skills though admittedly I don’t have as much time to devote to it as I would like. I also once could speak a little Portuguese and Lithuanian, but don’t test me, please; it has been some time since I have employed those skills.

PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY

I think it is important that a person knows as much as they can about what is going on inside them, how one can improve general health by adopting healthy life styles, and when it does come down to using medications, what the medications are expected to do, and how to use them safely and effectively. I figure if I can teach you about your condition, then you make the correct day-to-day choices which help you to improve; you will end up feeling better, and then I feel successful. It’s a win-win relationship.

New patients in the Department of Rheumatology are seen by referral from your personal physician or nurse practitioner. Most of the time, your personal physician or nurse practitioner should be able to make your first appointment with us during your appointment; other times, our medical assistant will call you to schedule your first appointment. Follow-up visits are scheduled as needed. My department and I want to be certain that all of your concerns are addressed, so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call (209) 735-3230. Thanks again for visiting my home page!

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
