My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and treat people of all ages with communication disorders and swallowing problems. I was introduced to the rehabilitation field by my grandmother, who was a physical therapist, and my mother, who was a Music Therapist. I believe that one of the most important meanings for our lives as humans is to communicate with each other. As a Speech Therapist, I can help people regain their ability to communicate. This makes my profession especially fulfilling.

My Practice Philosophy

One of my favorite professors taught me to “treat each therapy session as if it will be the last time you see the patient.” In other words, do your very best for the patient and end on a positive note. I try to approach each patient this way. I also believe in a team approach and consulting other professionals about the patient’s problem. I believe in using the latest therapy techniques and educating myself by using the Internet, taking courses, and talking with colleagues. Lastly, my professor taught me to “approach each therapy session with a sense of wonder.” To me, this means that I need to listen to my patients because they have so much to teach me. My patients help me to become a better speech pathologist.

My Credentials

M.S. Degree California State University – Sacramento
Joined Kaiser 2003

My Tenure at Kaiser Permanente

I have been with Kaiser Permanente for several years and during that time, Kaiser has given me the tools, technology, and resources to provide the best care to my patients. My supervisors have many years of experience and wisdom; I so much appreciate the guidance they have provided.

Why I Like Practicing at Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser has the technology that was unavailable to me in many other settings. For example, we have a VisiPitch voice analyzer that helps me to treat patients with Parkinson Disease and other voice disorders. We also have Speech Generating Devices for nonverbal patients to use. I am proud of the fact that Kaiser promotes preventive health care for both employees and patients. The Friday Farmer’s market, exercise classes, and classes such as Tai Chi for patients are just some of the benefits Kaiser offers to its patients. We also have a new computer system called “HealthConnect” that lets us access and create the patient’s medical records instantly. There are many reasons why I enjoy working at Kaiser and I hope that this shows when I am working with my patients.
