Karen Frey, PNP, MS, RN
Regional Neurofibromatosis (NF) Clinic Coordinator
Welcome to the Genetics Multi-Specialty Clinics at Oakland Kaiser!
About Me
I coordinate the Regional Neurofibromatosis Clinic for Kaiser Northern California. Our clinic provides multidisciplinary evaluation and case management for patients with Neurofibromatosis 1 and Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF1 and NF2). Our goal is to provide coordinated care by facilitating communication between specialists, primary providers, patients, and families. In my role, I provide ongoing assessment, planning, facilitation, and advocacy, and help NF patients and families with problems as they arise. I also provide education about NF to physicians, nurses, and other clinicians, as well as sharing our clinic model and outcomes with providers and organizations outside Kaiser. Our clinic maintains an active relationship with national NF organizations, including the Childrens’ Tumor Foundation, and NF, Inc.
I received my Bachelors degree in Nursing from the University of Iowa, and a Masters degree in Community Health from the University of Michigan. I completed my Pediatric Nurse Practitioner credential and certification at the University of California in San Francisco. Before I began my work in the NF Clinic in 2002, I was a coordinator in the Regional Spina Bifida Clinic. During my 10 years at Kaiser, I managed the Diabetes Care Management and MultiFit programs in the Health Education Department in Oakland, and worked as a Nurse Coordinator in the Regional Breast Cancer Tracking Program. Prior to coming to Kaiser, I worked in a number of health care roles, including Public Health and Home Health Nursing, Occupational Health at Hewlett-Packard, hospital nursing, and as a nursing instructor at the University of San Francisco. I owned and maintained a private holistic nursing practice in San Francisco for 5 years. In my personal life, my husband, son, and I are building a solar-design home in El Cerrito. I enjoy bicycling, traveling, and hiking. I incorporate yoga into my daily life as a way to stay balanced, fit, and to manage stress.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
