Welcome to My Home Page

This home page gives me an opportunity to introduce myself to you and to provide you some general information regarding common orthopaedic issues and also some specific information about what to expect after certain kinds of surgery.

About Me

I was born and raised in the Midwest. I headed east for my undergraduate education, attending Princeton University, where I rowed crew and majored in mechanical and aerospace engineering. After graduation, I worked designing jet aircraft engines. I enjoyed my work as an engineer, finding a deep sense of intellectual satisfaction from analyzing complex technical challenges and developing and implementing solutions. During this time, I realized that I also wanted to be part of a profession in which I could have a direct and worthwhile impact on the day-to-day lives of individuals.

Changing coasts and careers, I moved to California, where I attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). I remained at UCSF for both my internship and my residency. Following residency, I went on active duty with the U.S. Air Force, during which time I served as both an orthopaedic surgeon and a rated flight surgeon. After leaving active duty, I joined Kaiser Permanente's Walnut Creek staff, where I have been practicing since 2001. My wife is also a Kaiser Permanente physician, and sees patients in Adult Internal Medicine at the Park Shadelands facility.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, sports, and flying. I am a commercial pilot and enjoy not only flying my family and myself on trips throughout the Southwest, but also more extreme maneuvers when performing aerobatics.

My Practice and Professional Interests

I have a general orthopaedic surgery practice with a special interest in sports medicine and joint replacement surgery. My joint replacement practice includes knee, hip, and shoulder arthroplasty. My sports medicine practice includes both arthroscopic and open treatment of common knee and shoulder problems such as meniscus injuries, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, and rotator cuff disease. Other parts of my practice include hand surgery and trauma surgery. I also treat many common pediatric orthopaedic problems, but can also refer your child to one of our pediatric orthopaedic specialists when necessary. Our talented podiatrists handle foot and ankle problems. Similarly, the spine clinic handles neck and back problems requiring expertise beyond that of your primary care physician.

I enjoy practicing at Kaiser Permanente because it affords me the opportunity to focus on practicing medicine and on my patients. When you arrive in my office as a patient, I am free to help you decide on the best way to treat your problem.

Preparing for an Office Visit

Your primary care physician has referred you to me for an evaluation to see if you might benefit from surgery for your particular problem. We will be focusing on that problem during your visit. If you have specific questions, please write them down and bring them to your appointment, so that we can be sure to answer them. If you have had studies or previous operations outside of the Kaiser Permanente system that relate to the problem for which you are being seen, please bring copies of reports for those studies or procedures.

Preparing for Surgery

Here are some guidelines about getting ready for your operation, whether it is an outpatient procedure, or you are being admitted to the hospital after the procedure: Same Day Surgery Instructions.

What To Expect after Surgery

If you are having knee arthroscopy please read this handout that lists my standard postoperative instructions, as well as exercises to perform after the procedure: Knee Arthroscopy Postoperative Instuctions. To view just the exercises, please see this handout: Knee Arthroscopy Exercises.

If you are having either shoulder arthroscopy or other outpatient shoulder surgery, please read this handout that lists my standard postoperative instructions, as well as exercises to perform after the procedure: Shoulder Arthroscopy Postoperative Instructions.

Here are my standard postoperative instructions for care following hand procedures such as carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, excision of a ganglion, or removal of a hand or finger mass: Hand Surgery Instructions.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
