My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a family practice physician assistant currently working in the Department of Urology. I see patients with urological problems while working under the direct supervision of the urologists. I currently do preoperative physical exams and provide information to patients about their pending surgeries. I also do follow up care for patients who have had kidney stones, cancer of the kidneys, testes or prostate cancer. I decided to become a physician assistant because I enjoy helping people. I also enjoy teaching patients about their medical problems so that they can better understand how to care for themselves.

My Credentials

BS, Health & Safety California State University – Sacramento 1981
MS, Social Work California State University – Sacramento 1983
Certificate, Family Practice Physician Assistant UC Davis 1999

My Practice Philosophy

I had originally wanted to become a high school health education teacher and in fact was in the process of working toward this goal when I took a break to have my children. Complications with both pregnancies opened my eyes to the fields of nursing and medicine. I was quite impressed with the care that my children and I received at Kaiser Permanente. I was also impressed with the compassion shown to my family. I decided to change my career direction to be able to provide both health education and care for patients by first becoming a nurse and then advancing to become a physician assistant. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to teach patients about how their bodies work and why there are breakdowns, whether it is due to injury or illness. I can now teach, treat and cure. I enjoy answering patients' questions because it means they are trying to better inform themselves in order to be more involved in their own care. Imagine the thrill to also work for the same organization that took such wonderful care of me and my family.

My Tenure With Kaiser Permanente

I started with Kaiser Permanente in April of 2000 as a physician assistant in the Medical Treatment Unit. I transferred to the Department of Urology in September 2007.

I enjoy being a part of the Kaiser Permanente organization because of the easy accessibility of information from all the different specialties and the close cooperation with the physicians.

Professional Interests & Affiliations

On a Personal Note

I have two boys who are very active in baseball. I enjoy watching their games. I am also an avid sports fan of professional basketball and baseball and enjoy watching the games on television and maybe even taking in a San Francisco Giants or Sacramento Kings game once in a while.

I also enjoy taking long walks and jogging along the American River Bike Trail. I can take in the sights of nature while also getting in some great exercise.
