Welcome to my home page!

As a member and now physician of Kaiser Permanente,, I consider myself part of the Kaiser "family." I was born in the Oakland Medical Center. My mother was one of the first Asian female physicians at Kaiser in Oakland. As a child, I remember visiting her clinic on weekends and being impressed by her ability to examine and evaluate sick children and infants. She comforted them and their parents. It was clear as I was growing up that I would become a physician.

As a college student on a Heart Association fellowship, I was fascinated by the acute aspects of cardiovascular medicine and the increasing number of medical and surgical therapies for adult and pediatric heart disease. I could study and work in all these areas by becoming an anesthesiologist. The acute nature of clinical work in the operating room and ICU is continually interesting and challenging. I love guiding a critically ill patient through complex surgery safely and efficiently.

Anesthesiology allows me to perform humanitarian work. As an undergraduate in Berkeley and as a medical student in San Francisco, I was interested in volunteerism on a local and international scale. Since I completed my cardiac anesthesiology fellowship, I have participated in over 45 international medical missions. I have worked in small rural clinics with no oxygen supplies and with power generated by car batteries. I have also worked in jumbo jets outfitted with state of the art operating equipment. Mission work allows me to enjoy learning from medical colleagues in different countries - to admire their creativity, resourcefulness, and ability to provide excellent care with minimal resources and support.

I have become involved in quality assurance aspects of anesthesia care and delivery in developing countries as well as on a state regulatory level. I serve as an expert medical reviewer to the California Medical Board and as the anesthesiologist member of the medical advisory board to the Smile Train organization. The Smile Train provides funding for reconstructive craniofacial surgery for children with congenital defects and for teaching of these techniques to local medical personnel. Case and peer review on a state and international level helps to promote provider education and protect patient safety.

I joined The Permanente Medical Group because the aspects of a team approach to patient care appeal to me. Thanks, Mom, for all your advice. It took a while, but it looks like I'm "home" now.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
