Welcome to my home page and to the Chemical Dependency Services at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center. I hope you will find useful information here about me, and my practice philosophy, as well as some useful links on the left hand side of this page to resources on Mental Health Information and Web Sites and general health topics.

I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and went to college in Missouri. I received my degree from St. Louis University Graduate School in 1976. After several years of clinical training in general psychiatry, I completed my internship at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System with a specialty in chemical dependency. I found that many of the veterans returning from Vietnam used alcohol and drugs to cope with personal distress. My interests in motivation and self-control skills matched well with the needs of people in recovery. I generally work with mature adults, but I enjoy working with teens and young adults. In addition to chemical dependency, I work with patients who have severe mental illness.

When I am not at work, my interests include trail running, Tai Chi, music (blues, rock, bluegrass, jazz), and being the sous-chef in my wife’s kitchen. I always encourage people to make sure they have frequent pleasurable events in their life and to enjoy the healing power of nature.

My Recommendations…

  • Ask for help. You will find a world of people who want you to succeed.
  • Learn how to control your feelings and actions. Most of the achievements in life are due to the practice of these skills.
  • For recovery – get connected to a therapy group where you talk about your feelings and concerns. Success is much more likely when you have regular contact with a group of people with whom you can relate and learn.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
