If you are new to Kaiser Oakland/Alameda, our How to access care section is a great place to start. We want you to achieve a sense of wellness in body, mind, spirit and Be inspired about yourself - THRIVE !!

I was born and raised in Oakland, not far from Kaiser Oakland Medical Center. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in Genetics, I left California to attend Harvard Medical School. Upon completion of my studies, I returned to the Bay Area and began my training at UC San Francisco Medical Center. Little did I know when I walked on campus for the first time that I would be there for seventeen years, the last ten as a member of the pediatric faculty. During my time there, I participated in clinical studies pertaining to pediatric acute lung injury as well as ventilator associated pneumonia. I also spent much of my time running a research laboratory where we studied the effects of mechanical forces on gene expression in lung cells. These studies were meant to improve the care of children who required mechanical ventilation. Although I enjoyed my time at UCSF tremendously, I felt it was time to return home to the East Bay and therefore moved to the Pediatric ICU at Kaiser Oakland in July of 2005.

Let me tell you a little about my approach to critical care medicine. If I am caring for your child, it means that he or she is critically ill or has had major surgery. We understand the stress this creates for family members and feel that a multidisciplinary approach by a team that includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, pharmacists, nutritionists, physical therapists and parents allows us not only to meet your child’s needs, but also your family’s needs as well. I will make myself available to talk to you on a daily basis after I have completed rounds and the team has determined the plan for the day. Understanding what is going on with your child will help ease some of your fears and concerns, so please do not hesitate to ask questions.

I hope you never need the PICU, but if you do, rest assured that your child will be cared for by specialists trained in pediatric critical care medicine who will bring the most updated, evidence-based care to your child’s bedside.

Let us know as soon as possible if you have a language preference other than English. We have translation services available at all times and would like to communicate about your child’s medical condition in whatever language makes you most comfortable.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my home page. Please feel free to give me any comments you have about it.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
