About Me

My name is John Kim. I knew during undergrad that I wanted to become a doctor, primarily because I wanted a job where I would feel I could make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. I thought medicine would be a perfect fit for me as it both incorporates strong academic skills as well as strong people skills.

In the process of getting my medical degree, I finished my bachelors of science at Berkeley; then, a master’s degree at Hahnemann University. I then moved to New York, where I attended New York Medical College for medical school. Finally, I went to the Mayo Clinic for my residency. During my training years, I grew to love medicine more and more. Medicine has been everything I anticipated it would be and more. I enjoy meeting people, even though it tends to be during stressful times. I enjoy the opportunity medicine gives me to help people overcome their difficult and scary situations. I enjoy teaching people about their bodies. I enjoy watching people get better.

I have worked for Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek since 2003 and my love for medicine continues to grow. As a hospitalist, I work integrally with other Kaiser Permanente specialists to bring the best care for my patients. My colleagues and patients inspire me daily.

On a systems level, Kaiser Permanente is always working to try to bring a high quality of care to patient care. This organization uses protocols for treating common diseases that are state of the art. Kaiser Permanente has, during my year with them, made multiple changes—all ultimately to try to improve the quality care. It is amazing to me that a large system is able to change so rapidly, but it is also a sign to me that Kaiser Permanente really puts patient care as their number one priority. In addition, Kaiser Permanente gives me ample educational opportunities to keep me up to date with the latest developments in medicine.

On my off days, when I’m not sleeping and resting—I enjoy hiking, camping, doing yoga, and running. During the winter, I often go up to the Sierra’s to snowboard. My favorite thing in the city is finding new tasty restaurants where I can indulge a little! I volunteer at an animal shelter in San Francisco and I also have been trying to participate in various clinical projects at University of California, San Francisco and Kaiser Permanente.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
