My Biography

Undergraduate School Cornell University (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna cum Laude), Ithaca, NY
Medical School: Cornell University School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha), New York, NY
Internship/Residency: University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, WA
Joined The Permanente Medical Group: 1994
Board Certification: Ophthalmology, American Board of Ophthalmology
Personal Interest/Hobbies: travel, scuba diving, food and wine

I grew up on the East Coast, mostly in and around the Boston area. After undergraduate and medical school at Cornell, I moved west for my residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of Washington in Seattle. I didn’t miss the harsh New England winters, so after finishing residency in 1994, I stayed on the West Coast and joined The Permanente Medical Group in South San Francisco. Kaiser has been my employment “home” for almost my entire professional life. My career at Kaiser Permanente has been both personally and professionally satisfying because I can’t think of another place I’d rather live or find a better group of colleagues with whom to work.

I currently serve as Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology. I practice general Ophthalmology and also perform surgery. The other members of the department also practice general Ophthalmology, and one member, Dr. Charlene Hsu, specializes in Pediatric Ophthalmology. In addition, we have easy access to multiple subspecialists throughout the region. My fellow doctors in the Eye Department at Daly City come from some of the best training programs in the country. While their resumes are impressive, I can assure you that they are even more impressive in person.

My philosophy of practice is to try to treat patients the way I would want one of my family members to be treated. I attempt to partner with patients to make sure they get the care they need in a way that is consistent with their own attitudes about their health.

When not at work as a doctor, I live on the Coast side with my wife and 3 dogs- all mixed breeds adopted from Animal Care and Control. We enjoy traveling, scuba diving, good food and wine in moderation (though the food part is difficult because my wife is a fabulous cook), and driving my old convertible on those rare, sunny Coast side days.

As an Ophthalmologist, I take appointments by referral. If you do not already have a referral, please call our appointment/advice line at (650) 742-2100 to make an appointment with a general practitioner. To make an appointment in our sub-specialty department, please call (650) 301-5800.

Our goal at Kaiser Permanente is to be your health plan of choice and deliver the quality medical care our members deserve. Thank you again for choosing Kaiser Permanente.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
