Welcome to my home page!

I have been with Kaiser Permanente on the Fresno Medical Center campus since January 2002. My training is in internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care medicine. For the first two-and-a-half years that I worked here at Kaiser, I worked primarily in the hospital. Since 2004, I have developed a more traditional pulmonary and critical care practice. I now have outpatient office hours for pulmonary consultation, and my time is split between hospital / intensive care and the office. I am interested in medical ethics, patient-family communication, and medical decision-making, since these issues are so common and important in my patients' lives.

My wife was raised in Fresno, so moving here has brought a great blend of work and family life. Before coming to Kaiser Permanente, I was in private practice in the East San Francisco Bay Area for six years. I practiced general medicine and pulmonary medicine at two hospitals and in two office locations. That experience gives me great appreciation of the integration of information and services we have here at Kaiser Permanente. Whether you get your primary care in Oakhurst, Clovis, Selma or Santa Rosa, we can quickly get most of your important medical data here in our hospital or in the pulmonary clinic. Contact with other specialists or your primary provider is as close as a pager or phone or voicemail – if they’re not right down the hall!

In the Pulmonary Department, we see asthma and smoking related lung diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis, lung tumors, chest infections, sleep apnea, and a variety of other conditions. Procedures and tests used in pulmonary medicine include bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, spirometry and complete pulmonary function testing. Chest x-rays and CT scans are often helpful in evaluating our patients. Please see the links on my home page to learn more about diseases or tests and procedures.

Beyond medicine, I am interested in family, sports and books. Raising three children keeps my wife and me very busy. We enjoy the mountains above Fresno - skiing in the winter and camping in the summer. As the kids get older we plan to start backpacking with them.

My philosophy for medical practice is to treat each patient as the most important patient. Discussing the management options with patient and family members, and choosing the right option for each individual patient, is very important to me. I feel that giving information about the illness and treatment is as important as the treatment itself.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
