My office is located on Pediatrics E

Hello, I'm John Belko, MD, from the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente, South Sacramento. I have designed my home page to provide you with reliable and informative Health Education materials and to let you know a little bit about me. There are many useful links to the left from which you may access many useful Kaiser Permanente resources including on-line appointments and medication refills.

Ever since I was a kid I was always fascinated by how the human body worked and in particular about what happened when a person became sick. It was during my sophmore year in high school that I had the unique opportunity to work closely with a physician-scientist. I had the chance to observe physcians in action both in the hospital and in the laboratory. The dedication and zeal that my mentors exhibited in caring for their patients and the patient-oriented research they conducted profoundly influenced me and have helped shape my career. They showed me that the key to being a great physician is to carefully listen to the patient. They showed me that medicine is both an art and a science and they also taught me that my patients are not only there for me to help, but are also there to help teach us about medicine.

My philisophy in the practice of medicine is simple: It's about you, my patient. I use the most up to date and available knowledge and tools to diagnose and treat the patients under my care and I base my medical decisions on objective evidence in the medical literature. I try to minimize the use of medications, especially antibiotics, unless they are really necessary because of emerging antibiotic resistance and the fact that all medicines have unintended side effects. I actively involve my patients in making decisions about treatment. I try to engage my patients, even the younger ones, in our discussions in the office. I also try very hard to make the visits fun for the kids and tend to play and joke during the visits. Most of the time we all have fun.

As an Infectious Disease Specialist, I have considerable experience in providing comprehensive care of HIV-exposed and HIV-infected children. I have conducted comprehensive evaluations of children adopted from orphanages abroad. I offer consultative services for individuals preparing for international travel. I have considerable experience and interest in the diagnosis and management of primary immunodeficiency syndromes, in the diagnosis and management of infections in immunocompromised hosts. I have a special interest in infections caused by the herpesviruses, particulary neonatal Herpes simplex 1 and 2 infections, Cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, Human herpesvirus-6, and Human herpesvirus-8. As part of providing exceptional care to my patients, I participate in the active surveillance of the epidemiology of infections in the greater Sacramento area. I also participate in hospital infection control programmes.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
