Thank you for coming to my home page. I will be starting my maternity leave mid October 2007 and will return next year. I am fortunate to work with a dedicated team of oncologists and in my absence they will be responsible for your care. Their webpages are listed below.

My Profession and Why I Chose It

I am an oncologist. I treat patients with blood diseases and cancers using chemotherapy and other innovative medications (i.e. monoclonal antibodies). Although I enjoy seeing patients with all types of malignancies, my practice has a predominance of patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, and gynecological cancer (i.e. ovarian cancer).

There are three main reasons why I became an oncologist. First, I am greatly influenced by my father. He was diagnosed with a blood disorder called myelodysplasia, a disease where the bone marrow was unable to make blood cells. He lived for 15 years after his diagnosis, undergone multiple blood transfusions, and suffered the side effects of iron overload and anemia. As a result, I was exposed to this new and exciting field during high school and had a wonderful mentor that guided me toward this subspecialty.

I also learned about the family perspectives of dealing with a loved one with terminal illness. This specialty also allows the physician the ability to get to know patients for a longer period of time. Whether the patient is cured of their disease or is needing help them to get through the trial and tribulations of treatment and its failures, there is a special long term bond that is built between patient and physician.

Lastly, I greatly enjoy the intellectual stimulation of the evolving field of oncology. This is one of the most exciting times of my specialty. New designer medications are constantly coming out to better tailor our treatment. Evidenced-based medicine is enhancing our ability to discover which regiment methods are the best. We are now able to treat more cancers successfully and with fewer side effects than 10 years ago. Thus, the field of oncology is intellectually challenging and emotionally rewarding.

My Practice Philosophy

My practice philosophy is to care for my patients in the same way that I care about my family and friends.

Why I Like Practicine Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente has allowed me to attain this goal. On average, Kaiser Permanente patients receive better quality of care than fee for service clients. The physician makes the medical decisions. There are no third party players dictating how many radiographic studies or which brand of medications I am allowed to use. There are no financial incentives to persuade physicians to treat the patient a particular way. I am allowed practice medicine for the benefit of my patients.

Other enjoyable aspects of Kaiser Permanente include being able to work in a collegial atmosphere with wonderful supportive staff and the ability to use an integrated computer system to obtain patient data quickly and efficiently. Kaiser Permanente also participates in clinical trials. This allows patients to obtain innovative new medications that may help with their cancer treatment. These different aspects have allowed me the freedom to be a better physician.

My Professional Interests and Affiliations

I am a member of American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American College of Physicians.

My Personal History

I was born in Taiwan in 1972 and at the age of eight, my family and I immigrated to the United States. For most of my life, I lived and was educated in Southern California. I attended college at UC Riverside. Since the year 2000, I have become a converted northern Californian. I joined Kaiser Permanente Morse Medical Center in January 2004. My husband is also a physician of Kaiser Permanente and we have one child.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing tennis, doing yoga, swing dancing, and traveling. Most importantly, I love spending time with my daughter and husband.
