My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist. This means I do therapy with people who have a variety of communication problems. I like to work with people on a one to one basis, to regain their communication skills. I decided to do this type of work because I feel that communication is a very important ability. It is a big part of who we are as individuals and it connects us to others in our family, community and society.

My Practice Philosophy

I feel that the ability to communicate is an essential human ability. Without this ability, people lose the close connection to others in their lives. To help a person restore this ability is very rewarding to me.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been a part of Kaiser Permanente since 1993. Over that time I’ve really come to appreciate the Mission of Kaiser Permanente in providing health education for all our members, to maintain health as well as health care for our members with acute health concerns.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I enjoy working at Kaiser Permanente because I have a wealth of information available from a large group of colleagues. I feel that Kaiser Permanente follows an ethical business model. There is a great deal of respect among all the various staff members. We share common goals and values about health care. Kaiser Permanente promotes professionalism, continued education standards and diversity in employment. I enjoy the wide variety of communication disorders that I am given the opportunity to treat at Kaiser Permanente; from infant swallowing to adult language, from cleft palate to vocal nodules and more.

Professional Affiliations

  • American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA)

My professional specialty area is voice disorders, in particular, voice restoration for those members following surgery for cancer of the larynx, for spasmodic dysphonia, for muscle tension dysphonia and other problems of voice. I have been a guest lecturer at California State University, Sacramento and San Francisco State University.

On a Personal Note

I have been blessed with the opportunity to have lived in several different states in the USA and to travel to several different regions of the world. I enjoy meeting and making friends with people of many different cultures and interests. I enjoy learning new things. I have learned to speak some basic Spanish and I hope to continue to become more fluent in this area of interest. I enjoy spending time with my family and pets. I enjoy working on home projects and creative projects. I enjoy appreciating many types of art and music. I enjoy the great outdoors, and enjoy being physically active in non-competitive sports and social activities with friends.

My college and university education and training have taken place in California. I started my college education at Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. I followed that with classes about health, complimentary and alternative medicine fields of study. I completed my Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree at San Francisco State University. Every year I participate in Continuing Education classes, seminars, and conferences to keep up to date in the field of Speech Pathology/ Communication Disorders.
