I grew up in a family of physicians with many doctors among my parents, grandparents, and uncles. It felt like I was going into the "family business" when I decided to pursue a career as a physician myself. I was always impressed by all the stories from my relatives about how fulfilling it was to help patients and how much they loved their work, despite the long road to get there. Now as a physician, I am passing on my similar experiences and stories to my children.

During my clinical rotations in medical school, I was intrigued by how the specialty of anesthesiology combined all the basic medical tools of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology into real clinical practice. I was especially impressed with the anesthesiologists that taught me, and I could see how their patients were helped and guided by them through the stressful, frightening events of surgery. It was not a hard decision for me to see that I, too, wanted to help patients through these vulnerable experiences. It is very gratifying to calm my patients' anxieties before surgery, provide a safe and pain-free experience during surgery or childbirth, and later receive their thanks when they realize that with the anesthesia I delivered, surgery did not have to be a difficult experience at all!

In the past few decades, there have been many advances in anesthesiology to make anesthesia and surgery much safer than it was in the past. In our department, we place patient safety first and we make it a point to keep up with the latest education, techniques, and equipment. This makes it easy for me, here at Kaiser Permanente Vallejo and Vacaville, to provide the safest anesthesia I can to all my patients.

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, I was on the anesthesia faculty at UCSF, as well as working in several other private hospitals. I'm very happy now to be working at Kaiser Permanente, where I can really concentrate on taking care of my patients throughout their surgery or childbirth and not have to worry about the "business" side of practice. I've found a practice style that I really enjoy in the Anesthesia Care Team approach here. I hope to continue to "Thrive" here for the rest of my anesthesia career.

Since joining Kaiser Permanente as an anesthesiologist, I've also found more time to spend with my family, which includes my wife (also a physician), my son, who is active with tennis and mountain biking, and my little musician of a daughter, who is doing great on the piano and violin. We enjoy traveling whenever our schedules permit, and one very memorable trip included five countries throughout Asia. More recently, we truly enjoyed our Alaskan cruise, as well as tours through several European countries.

I grew up following the White Sox in Chicago, and I remain a loyal fan, even from 2000 miles away. The White Sox swept the World Series in 2005, and one of the greatest thrills in my life was to catch Game 2 in person in Chicago! But if you come to Kaiser Permanente Vallejo or Vacaville for surgery or childbirth, I'm ready to provide you with great anesthetic care, whether you root for the A's, the Giants, some other team, or don't like baseball at all.
