My Biography

I was born and raised in a small town in the mountains of Montana. I attended Carroll College in Helena, Montana. I then entered the University of Washington School of Medicine. After graduation I followed my engineer husband to Silicon Valley and started my residency training at Kaiser Foundation Hospital Santa Clara. I practiced general Internal Medicine at the Kiely facility for six years. In 1996 as inpatient medical care became more specialized we became one of leaders in a movement toward hospital medicine. I became a hospital based physician, leaving my clinic practice to care for patients during times of critical illness. I chose to practice primarily at night. Currently, my responsibilities include caring for hospitalized patients overnight and teaching and supervising resident physicians. Although I miss my clinic patients, the flexibility of my schedule allowed me to spend more time with my family.

Over the years of dealing with patients and families in crisis and dealing with serious illness I became interested in palliative care. Kaiser started an inpatient palliative care program to help patients and their families navigate the many choices facing them. I joined the Palliative Care team in 2005. I feel that being able to offer consultations to patient and families to help them identify their goals and make choices that make sense for them is a very important. Palliative Care is now recognized as a specialty in Internal Medicine and I became board certified in 2008.

The time that I am not on duty has been spent raising three active children. I enjoy hiking and bicycling as well as reading and enjoying my family.
