My Biography

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, I attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Comparative Literature. I received my Medical Degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1981 and completed my internship and residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. I am Board Certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Prior to joining The Permanente Medical Group in 1991, I was an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have published on lead poisoning, the use of diagnostic tests/xrays in the emergency department, and syncope. I play an active role nationally and locally within Kaiser Permanente. I am currently the National Medical Director for Ambulance Services and EMS, and the Base Station Medical Director for Alameda County EMS.

I am married, have two children and enjoy skiing, hiking and independent films. I am a member of the National Association of EMS Physicians, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Physicians for Non-Violent Society, and a Fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians.

I am committed to providing my patients the highest quality medical care with sensitivity to personal needs. Please contact me or the Emergency Department if we may be of assistance.

I and the entire Emergency Department want to be certain that all of your concerns are addressed. In that regard, you may be asked to make an appointment for follow-up care with your personal care provider. For appointments, please call:

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
