Welcome to my home page and to the Department of Psychiatry at Redwood City. Continue reading below to learn more about me and my practice at Redwood City. My office hours are listed above and you will find links to useful mental health sites on the left.

I am a psychologist working primarily with adult patients in the Department of Psychiatry. I have been with Redwood City Kaiser Permanente since 1991. As a psychologist, I provide psychotherapy in individual and group sessions, and collaborate with other providers in Psychiatry and medical departments. My treatment approach includes a thorough assessment of the symptoms you are experiencing and how they may have developed. Together we will make a plan which may include brief individual therapy, structured group therapy programs, medication treatments with a psychiatrist or primary care provider, and using other resources, such as health education classes or community resources. I have particular interest in treating depression and anxiety disorders, and coordinate our Depression Treatment Program, which offers cognitive-behavioral therapy groups for depression.

My training in psychology began as an undergraduate at Stanford University, and continued with graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I received my M.A. (1987) and Ph.D. (1989) in Clinical and Social Psychology. My graduate study included both clinical and research training, with particular focus on Community Psychology and preventive interventions. I continued this emphasis in my internship and post-doctoral fellowship at UC San Francisco/ San Francisco General Hospital (1989-1991). I have always been interested in the challenges and complexities people face as they go through their lives, and how our strengths and vulnerabilities emerge in the face of stress and in various social contexts. As a clinical psychologist, I am drawn to the role of assisting my patients as they find their way through these challenges, to help them develop greater understanding of the impact of psychological, biological, and social forces, and to develop more adaptive skills for coping.

Working at Kaiser Permanente was a natural choice for me because I believe strongly in the value of integrated and readily accessible medical care, including mental health care. We have the opportunity here to offer education, and preventive or early interventions, as well as treatment for those with the most severe conditions. Our health care system considers mental health part of the whole person, which I believe allows more people to get the care they need, including those who might be reluctant to seek care. Kaiser also provides me with exceptional colleagues – very skilled and caring professionals who I can count as part of a team providing our members outstanding care.

My current professional affiliations include membership in the American Psychological Association and the San Mateo County Psychological Association.

Having spent significant portions of my life elsewhere (in Illinois and in San Diego, CA), I feel very fortunate to live and work here on the SF Peninsula. I enjoy many forms of outdoor activity, including walking, hiking, and cross country skiing. I am a neglectful organic gardener and enjoy cooking with whatever produce the garden’s creatures leave for me.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
