My Biography

Welcome. My Home Page is oriented to providing you information on the anesthesia portion of your care at Kaiser Kaiser Permanente San Jose. You can also learn more about Kaiser Permanente from the links on the left-hand side of the page.

I am pleased to share something about myself. I am from a family with three generations of physicians. Growing up in an environment where science and caring for people blend harmoniously made the decision to be a physician very natural.

After growing up in Palo Alto, I completed undergraduate at UC Berkeley, Medical School at UC San Francisco School of Medicine and specialized in Anesthesia and Critical Care at Stanford. I also completed a Residency in Internal Medicine and I am board certified with the American Board of Anesthesiology in the specialty of anesthesiology and with the American Board of Internal Medicine in the specialty of internal medicine.

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1985 and practiced Anesthesia and ICU at Kaiser Permanente San Jose since that time. The blend of teamwork focused on caring for our patients and the continual pursuit of better quality are things keeping me energized about my work.

Over the years, I am proud to have held various administrative positions, which gave me opportunities to lead Kaiser Permanente to deliver even better care to our members. Currently, I am an Associate Executive Director of the Permanente Medical Group.

Clinical interests…

Intensive Care with a particular interest in working to improve patient and family experience during this difficult period.

On a personal note…

Outside of work, I focus on my children’s activities and spend time with my extended family.

My philosophy of care...

My approach to caring for my patients, particularly in the Intensive Care Unit, is to take what science has to offer and carefully adapt it to what fits best for the patient. I believe in working with my patients and their loved ones to determine the most appropriate treatments. The science of medicine has to be connected to a very human side on how it is practiced.

I stress open and clear communication. It is only through mutual understanding that trust and respect can form between the patient and physician. I respect the power of science, yet, accepts the limitations of what medicine can achieve. I value the sanctity of life and the dignity and fullness with which it should be enjoyed.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
