About Me

My father was a physician. On the weekends, I would tag along with him while he rounded on his patients. I was so impressed with the relationships he had with his patients and the impact he had on their lives, and I often remember wishing that I could be just like him. That inspiration will always be with me.

I believe one's specialty is often a reflection of a physician's personality. Anesthesia is a quiet specialty. We're very much behind the scenes. Most people, even those involved in the medical field, don't truly grasp what we do on a daily basis, and we do not employ a public relations department to advertise. I very much enjoy the close camaraderie of the operating room environment and the hands-on practice of intraoperative care. There is a lot involved in "putting someone to sleep" and I relish it.

In my opinion, Kaiser Permanente represents the best way for physicians to practice and work together. Because all the Kaiser Permanente physicians are equal partners, there are not the same political or financial influences that exist in the world of fee-for-service medicine. We can practice medicine according to our best judgment. Most importantly, the doctors, young and old, can learn from and often help out each other. This collegial "think tank" is the greatest resource afforded to physicians, and I know that patients benefit from this every day, even without realizing it.

The concept of healing has evolved to become a multifaceted concept that involves the mind, spirit, and physical body. All three dimensions need to be nurtured and cared for. I strongly feel that a patient's support network is critical to the healing process, and we physicians are part of that network. Patients often don't realize (and we don't publicize) that we often worry about them - checking up on them after hours, and even losing sleep over them. We truly want what is in the best interests for their health.

I have passions for both ice hockey and scuba diving, and enjoy both immensely. While I don't think the San Jose Sharks will be calling upon my services in the near future (except in my dreams!) I try to play as often as possible. Scuba diving is just an incredibly ethereal experience. It is very humbling to step into another world, one that is incredibly gorgeous but where you are at the whims of nature and her animal kingdom. Besides that, it's just a blast!
