My Healthcare Practice

I am an Internal Medicine specialist, dealing with a wide variety of adult medical conditions. I enjoy the challenge of dealing with complex medical problems and figuring out the right diagnosis - it's like being a detective and having to solve the puzzle. As an Internist I also get to deal directly with patients in their day to day lives and hopefully make a positive impact from educating them on preventative care and healthy lifestyles to dealing with serious problems when they occur.

I am a strong advocate of patient education and informed decision making. A patient who has a good understanding of their medical conditions will do a better job of taking care of them. I believe that as a physician I need to be thorough, caring, and listen to my patient's concerns, and take the time to do the job right. I also try to be an example for a healthy lifestyle for my patients - after all, preventing problems from occurring in the first place is better than having to fix problems after they've happened.

Why I Chose Kaiser Permanente

I have been with Kaiser Permanente here in Roseville since 1990. After working in Southern California and Washington for the previous seven years, I found a place here that fit my practice style and lifestyle. I plan on staying here for the duration of my medical career.

There are many reasons that I enjoy working at Kaiser Permanente. The physician is in charge here - I have the autonomy to do what is best for my patients without any outside interference. The emphasis is on quality care, and I refuse to compromise my principles on providing the best for my patients. I also enjoy the opportunity to teach medical students and resident physicians through our affiliation with the UC Davis Medical school.

About Me

I grew up in Wisconsin and then went to college and medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago. After completing my residency in Chicago in 1982, I migrated west to California. In addition to my busy schedule at work, I am a hiker and backpacker and enjoy sea kayaking (especially in the San Juan Islands of Washington - it is quite a thrill to see orca whales up close from a kayak!). In the winter I am an avid skier, especially backcountry ski mountaineering, and will try to get out in the mountains whenever I can. I've enjoyed seeing my son turn into quite a skier as well - pretty soon he'll be leaving my in his dust!

My Qualifications

In addition to my interest in primary care and preventative medicine, I also have an interest in mountaineering medicine and am a member of the Wilderness Medical Society. In my role as a teacher, I am an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine.

My Credentials

Medical school Northwestern University School of Medicine, Chicago, IL
Residency Rush Presbyterian St Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, IL
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
